By James GrantJames holds a Bproc, LLB BA hons (psyc) and a PhD in law (WITS).
He was an academic at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from 2000-2014 where he attained the rank of Associate Professor. He has 16 accredited publications to his name and, in 2018, published a book entitled ‘The Responsible Mind in South African Criminal Law’.
In 2014-2015 he assisted the state in the appeal against the culpable homicide conviction of Oscar Pistorius to the Supreme Court of Appeal.
In 2015 he did his pupillage at the Johannesburg Society of Advocates and started practice as an advocate in December of that year.
In 2019 he was called to act as a Judge of the High Court of South Africa (Gauteng Local Division, Johannesburg) for two terms. He adjudicated criminal matters in the first term and civil matters in the second term. He was called again in 2020 to act as a Judge of the High Court of South Africa (Gauteng Local Division, Johannesburg) in which he adjudicated both criminal and civil matters.
He returned to practice as an advocate in September 2019.
James immigrated to Denmark in June 2022 where he continues to practice as an advocate of the High Court of South Africa, although he is only able to appear in person in exceptional circumstances. Otherwise he continues to write and runs his practice remotely, drafting legal papers and writing opinions.
